Huge Second Half Lifts Miller Over Evangel Christian, 106-62

1/30/12 - After a long weekend of rest, the Mavericks came back to Alumni Gym after playing one of their best games of the season against VES in a 75-63 victory. Their opponent was Evangel Christian out of Richmond, a good team who sported a 20-6 record coming into this game. They had one player who averaged over 30 points a game and we knew coming in it would be a great challenge for us to play solid team defense.

After a first quarter that continually traded baskets with lots of transition opportunities, Miller gained a small advantage in the second half with solid play from Andrew White and Travis Hester. We ended the first half up by 7 with a score of 44-37, but going into halftime knowing that we could play better team basketball.

The Mavericks responded with a great sense of urgency and exploded out to a commanding lead and never looked back. They outscored Evangel 62-25 in the second half with a great array of offensive skills, led by Andrew White who had a season-high 38 points (and astoundingly, only played 3 quarters!). Cannon and Hester also had 15 and Anderson also had 11. We shot 45% (9-20) from 3 and really did a much better job being physical and limiting them to one shot, which created more opportunities for us in transition.

We are now 15-5 on the season and will enjoy a little rest while preparing for our next big game - a rematch with VES down in Lynchburg. We have had tremendous support at Alumni Gym and we are glad to be undefeated so far in front of our home crowd. We hope to bring the same intensity and focus on the road!

Highlights of this game will be coming shortly. If you haven't seen any highlight videos of our past games, check us out on YouTube at www.youtube.com/MillerMavsBasketball.
