Miller vs VES - Read a Miller Student's Perspective!

2/7/12 - Tonight our Miller Mavericks go down to Lynchburg to face a tough VES team at 7pm, who we defeated 75-63 in Alumni Gym last week. It will be the first of 3 crucial games - @ VES, @ Benedictine, and Blue Ridge at home - and after a week's rest, we are ready!!

To give a little light on how big this game will be, here's an example of a student's perspective on what the last Miller/VES matchup felt like. Meghan Noga, a student at Miller School, wrote a beautiful synopsis...check it out!

33 for 34

Scoring almost the same number as number on his jersey, 21 of which were in the first
quarter, Andrew White, number 34, was, to say the least, on fire at the Miller v. VES match last
night. I briefly spoke with his grandmother and she could not be more proud of her grandson.
She talked about how he was going to Kansas and, at one point during the game, she leaned over
to a VES parent and said, “He got those 21 points!” The VES parent looked less than excited
and ended up scooting farther and farther down the bench as the night went on. Yet, how could
you not notice number 34? He was on his game last night and out of all the basketball events we
have been to this year, I don’t think we have see Andrew play so well. I know for a fact that the
entire Miller community is proud of Andrew and his amazing playing last night.
There were a few other players that stood out too. Like Chase Cannon who, at one point,
apparently got scratched and had to be bandaged up and then, elbowed in the face. Despite these
injuries though, Chase had an impressive game with 18pts on the night. He had immense
amounts of support from the Mav fan section and I definitely think that helped ALL the players.
Chase never ceases to astonish ALL the fans, both home and away, with his incredibly skilled
perfect 3 pointers. We are all very proud of Chase.
One should never judge Josh Majors by his height. He may be one of the shorter players
on the team, but his size does not reflect his skill and heart. It’s obvious that he loves the sport
and that was made perfectly clear in last night’s match. On more than one occasion, I heard
comments from behind me complimenting Josh on how well he was playing.
It’s hard to miss Devon Anderson on the court - his bright neon shoes grab everyone’s
attention. Even without his distinct footwear though, he still would have stood out. His power
and love for basketball can inspire and capture anyone’s attention. Although he had a few nasty
falls, he never once let his team down and that, by all standards, is a successful night.
Tony Washington is one of the newer players to the Miller basketball community, but just
because he is new does not mean he is shy. Tony accomplished two massive dunks that got the
crowd wailing and has definitely made his mark on the Mavs and has become a crowd favorite.
Keep it up Tony.
And of course, Markell Lodge. The youngest on the team, Kell always seems to impress
both teams at games. Last night was no exception. Near the end of the fourth quarter, one of the
VES players was attempting a shot. Kell didn’t agree and smacked the ball out of his hands
sending it flying across the court. A unified “OHHHHHHH” roared from the crowd. I looked
down to some of the J.V VES players and even they were scratching their heads with their
eyebrows raised. In the end, all of the guys played phenomenally last night. They all should be

pleased with how they performed and we cannot wait for the next game.
It’s hard not to go to a Miller Varsity game and be completely impressed and mesmerized
by the players skill. It truly is like going to a college game. I honestly do not think one would
have ever seen playing like the playing I saw last night at an AHS game. It makes me proud of
my school and the guys who are on the team. I think I speak for everyone when I say that you
cannot watch a game like the one last night and not at least think ‘yea, that’s MY school’.
But this win doesn’t mean we can sit back and chill. For on February 14, rival school
Blue Ridge will be visiting the Miller campus. And yes, they may have won the last time we
played them. But this is OUR court. We’ve got the home advantage and the crazy fans that have
an endless amount of love and respect for our guys. And it won’t be just any home game.
Starting with a Black Out Pep Rally, the students of Miller will be spending all afternoon getting
hyped for one of the biggest nights of the season. And if you thought last night was intense, just
wait ‘till the 14th - Blue Ridge has another thing comin’.

While we all will be excited for our next home game vs Blue Ridge, we are focused on our next two road games at VES and Benedictine. Go Mavericks!
